This vase is made in black clay with the shellac technique. The shellac is painted on a pot that is bone dry, then the clay surrounding the design is wiped away. The shellac design resists being wiped away and leaves a raised design. The glaze breaks over the raised edges of the design leaving a beautiful 3-D finish.

The clay is then wiped away with a damp sponge leaving the areas with shellac raised. The honey nutmeg glaze breaks over the raised design enhancing it beautifully.
